Access to Healthcare Network’s (AHN) overall purpose is to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals in our community by providing and expanding access to services that address the clinical and social determinants of health. In addition to providing direct service to over 170,000 uninsured, underinsured, and low-income Nevada residents since its inception in 2006 AHN also acts as an intermediary organization, through its model of community “Shared Responsibility”, to support, strengthen, and integrate the health care and social service delivery system and stakeholders.

A one of a kind in the nation nonprofit medical discount program, Access Medical is designed to provide access to high quality healthcare at an affordable price for our communities low income uninsured and underinsured population. The success of Access Medical is built off of the idea of the Shared Responsibility Model which means that everyone gives a little, and everyone benefits. Members pay a small, income based membership fee for access to the discounted provider network and participating healthcare providers receive a timely, yet reduced payment. We believe Shared Responsibility is a win-win situation for our members and for the community as a whole. The idea behind the model is that health care and insurance costs can better be controlled when more patients are able to contribute to the cost of their care. Additionally, people will be more likely to receive preventive healthcare and will have fewer hospitalizations for preventable conditions when care is made more affordable and accessible for all.  The rates of illness, ER visits, and even death are also reduced because of access to affordable care. In short, a Shared Responsibility Model is good for patients, healthcare providers, insurance companies, and the entire community. Quick facts about Access Medical:

  • More than 2,000 providers contracted throughout Nevada representing all major specialties and most major health systems
  • Served more than 30,000 individuals
  • Maintains an ER utilization rate of between 4.1 and 4.4 ER visits per 1,000 members per month
  • Was written into the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as demonstration project
  • Has been looked at as a model for municipalities such as New York City, NY and Atlanta, GA
